We figured out that since all public transport is free in Luxembourg we could take trains and busses to the border of Germany for free and then paid 11 euros for the family to get the last couple miles to Trier. We were not planning on going but using the public transport app it was too easy to skip. We were really glad that we went. The food there was amazing and was really cheap. Hot pretzels were 3 for a 3 euros. I got a bratwurst. Actually I got two because after I finished the first I got back in line and grabbed another.
We visited the Roman gates that used to be part of the city walls. The gates were not destroyed by wars so they are original and 2000 years old. We were lucky and were the last people allowed to visit the third floor because someone had rented it out for a wedding or something.
The train was incredibly smooth and quiet with the exception of a crying baby on each trip. It was the only country that stopped us and checked our IDs. They were not messing around.
It was nice not having a schedule. We just caught whatever train was next.
The gates in Trier were very ornate. It was three or four levels tall.
The town already had Christmas decorations up. It was an amazing square that looked like it belonged in a movie.
Iām not sure if this was my first or second bratwurst. The mustard and bread was spectacular.
