We took my parents and the children to a tile workshop in Caldas. We started with a light tan looking tile and held a template with little holes on it. After we dragged a porous bag of charcoal over it. Everyone but Penny and Gwen did a 4 tile mosaic. We all failed multiple times at the charcoal part and had to wipe off the dust and start again. There was a black paint type substance that we had to use to paint along the charcoal dots. We had to use squeeze bottles of a strange type of paint that dried in 2-3 seconds on the tile. Lindsay did the best by far. I did not possess the patience or attention to detail required. Max went completely off the rails and tried to incorporate his favorite video game characters into the tiles, all while not following the pattern provided. Our instructor was very knowledgeable and encouraged Max’s artistic interpretation of the assignment.
Gwen was extremely excited to make a tile. It was the happiest she has been in a while.
Lindsay was the slowest, but most had the most precise execution of the painting part.
Max was proud of his work. My father picked the simplest design that only required 5 or 6 lines. In hindsight it was a good decision. The colors of the paint during this step do not at all represent what they look like after firing in the kiln.
