Lindsay and I took Pops to Leiria Castle and Mom watched the kids. I had a plan before they arrived to steadily increase the danger level of the castles. I may have gone too far warning my parents almost constantly about the uneven stones, uneven stairs, and lack of safety railings. Everyone survived. They had some of the parts of the castle blocked off that were previously open to explore. Lindsay thinks it was because they had just held a medieval festival there.
We were finishing up exploring and heading back down the walls to the car. I let Pops hit the button on the public elevator that takes you up the mountain.
It was windy and still a little cool out but the kids took every opportunity to swim in the pool at the AirBNB. I had never swam in a salt water pool before. It was much easier to open your eyes under water and it didn’t have the burning sensation chlorine does.
This is the view from the top of the castle of a part that was closed off. Max and I climbed it before and if we really wanted to I’m sure no one would have stopped us from going there, but a barrier was blocking the entrance.
We passed about 7 of these on the highway. They were doing at least 80 MPH. Each one had at least one soldier poking out of the top. It did not look like a pleasant experience.
